Daily Fantasy Sports

The concept of the daily fantasy sports game is relatively new. It takes the traditional fantasy sports model and compresses it into a daily, and sometimes weekly, game.

History

Daily fantasy sports is a new niche in the fantasy sports industry. Like traditional fantasy sports, it takes into account a participant's performance to determine an owner's score. But instead of being stuck with the same team through a whole season, daily fantasy sports contests last just one day (or in the case of football or NASCAR, one weekend). Daily fantasy sports is quicker and more numbers-driven. Daily fantasy sports websites do not compete for the same players as traditional sports games, but instead market themselves as complimenting traditional fantasy sports.[1]

Daily Fantasy Sports Gambling

The daily fantasy sports model is particularly well-suited for online sports betting.

Legality

Many daily fantasy sports websites allow their players to bet on games. Currently, daily fantasy sports is the only legal form of online sports betting allowed in the United States. The primary difference between gambling on daily fantasy sports and traditional gambling on sports is that daily fantasy sports allows gamblers to bet on teams of various players versus betting on the teams themselves. Daily fantasy sports websites promoters argue that this new genre of gaming exploits an inefficiency that traditional gambling on sports doesn't offer.[2]
